One of my Ph.D. students, Amy Forss, is working on a dissertation on Mildred Brown, the co-founder and long-time editor of the Omaha Star, the local African American newspaper here in Nebraska's biggest city. What makes Brown unique is the central role she played in establishing, building and editing a major newspaper. She is one of the very few women during the mid-20th century in such a prominent newspaper position; men tended to dominate the field (as they still do!).
Amy recently passed her comprehensive exams and is moving forward on the dissertation. In the meantime, she has written a cover story on Mildred Brown for Omaha's free weekly, The Reader. Check it out!
